How to...Make a Business Case for taking the Mic

For many entrepreneurs, public speaking feels like something reserved for politicians, corporate executives, or professional speakers. It can be one of the most practical ways to grow a small business.
This is your weekly Entrepreneur Insights 5-minute read with ideas to improve your business in a How to Series format.
Speaking at a chamber event, industry seminar, community forum, trade show, or business breakfast gives you something advertising often struggles to achieve: credibility in the room. When people hear you explain a problem clearly, share useful insight, and answer questions with confidence, they begin to see you as someone worth trusting.
Prominence
The first benefit is visibility. In markets where business relationships still matter deeply, being seen in the right rooms can help people remember your name before they need your product or service.
Expertise means persuasive ability
The second is authority. A short presentation on cash flow, customer service, digital marketing, food safety, export readiness, or any area connected to your business can position you as more than a vendor. It shows that you understand the wider issues your customers face.
Speaking puts your business in the right rooms. Share useful insight, build trust, and make it easier for people to remember what you do.
Networking is valuable
The third is relationship-building. Public events create natural follow-up opportunities. A five-minute conversation after your session may lead to a referral, partnership, media interview, or corporate enquiry.
Feedback is valuable
The fourth is market research. Questions from the audience can reveal what potential customers worry about, are confused by, or are willing to pay to solve. That feedback can sharpen your offer.
The key is not to turn every talk into a sales pitch. Focus on being useful. Share examples. Offer practical advice. Make it easy for people to understand what you do and who you help.
For small business owners, speaking is not about becoming famous. It is about becoming known for something specific. The more clearly the market understands your expertise, the easier it becomes for opportunity to find you.
